MMA Striking Tutorial: Two Variations of the Check Hook

Engage Athlete and UFC fighter Brad Riddell breaks down a variation of a hook - the check hook. The check hook is a good tool to deal with a pressure fighter. This manoeuvre consists of a normal left/right hook, combined with some nifty footwork. As your opponent comes forward in an overly aggressive manner, you almost simultaneously take a step back, pivot on your lead leg, and swing your rear leg while throwing a hook. The result is sort of like when a matador sidesteps a bull and sticks him, but instead you sidestep your opponent, and catch him with a hook for his efforts.

Watch this video from Brad’s Quake Combat YouTube channel where he describes two variations of the check hook and include examples from Floyd Mayweather, Israel Adesanya, and Adam Boussif.
