MMA Striking Tutorial: Effective Knees Explained

A knee strike (commonly referred to simply as a knee) is a strike with the knee, either with the kneecap or the surrounding area. The role of knees in martial arts can cause devastating effects if used correctly. We see fighters use them to great effect in combat sports.

Engage Athlete and UFC fighter Brad Riddell explains all the nuances you need to know about knees. He covers the rear knee, the switch knee, and the walking knee; as well as the scenarios where each are appropriate. If you are unclear on the details of how to throw effective knees, then the video is for you.

In this instructional video, Riddell also demonstrates a really easy way to avoid being kneed. As someone who has spent a fair bit of his career fighting taller opponents, angles and footwork have helped him avoid knees. However, pushing your opponent is one really effective and simple way to disrupt your opponent's knee. Towards the end of the video, he shows you how this works.
